REFLECTION
I found this a rewarding task in itself. This process of noting my interaction allowed me to think about all the aspects to do with each of the subsidiary items of Literacy and Numeracy, and what parts of my day involved them. I also found it easier to source responses for the Reading / Writing / Listening and Visual components of Literacy and Numeracy, however the application of these devices into technological and software components was a little more hidden. I mean, we all are capable of using our mobile phones, well some of us, but it wasn’t until completing the Visual section that I realised I was reading icons to select the button depicting my text message storage area, or the call and end-call buttons. These simple yet effective pieces of non-verbal, non-written iconography assist us in daily life. Following simple non-descript, yet clear directions and road-signage to physical examples where we pick up a telephone and or talk face-to-face with each other. These devices of communication are also present in teaching and are valued pieces of the puzzle by which we all operate. For example, if we want to walk somewhere we must recognise the direction in which we are travelling and observe the environment in which we are in and may need to dress appropriately. It is also through information sharing that we gain further insight into our existence and others around with whom we interact either socially, professionally or otherwise. It certainly has me thinking how many more items in my day that I could have listed but missed out due to being over-whelmed by other components within the small space in which I have been working.
Really liked your work on the Week 2 Activities, just goes to show just how much we all rely on literacy and numeracy outside of the bounds of schooling. I remember so many times at school when I didn't feel I was learning anything relevant for my life, and so I think this activity helps us (well me) to see just how important it will to teach skills that will be transferable to real life, and become our students primary discourses.
